Common Issues Requiring Auto Electric Repair

While it's gas that you put in your car to make it run it also uses electricity in order to operate. The electricity used by your car has a number of different duties, from powering the radio to keeping the car running. Should something go wrong with the electrical system you could run into a variety of different problems. The following are 5 of the most common auto electric issues that occur.

Blown fuse

Nearly every electrical system in the vehicle has at least one fuse in which the electricity runs through prior to getting to the system itself. The fuse acts as a protector that will cut off the flow of electricity if too much of it is coming or if there is a short circuit. If you suddenly lose power to all your power windows or all of your blinkers for example, it is likely that the fuse of those independent systems was blown and needs to be replaced. Thankfully this is often very cheap.

Stuck relay

Many electrical systems also use a relay. These relays are basically on and off switches that are incorporated into electrical systems that don't require the end device to be operating all of the time, such as the fuel pump. Should the relay become stuck in the on position it will cause damage to the part and it will eventually drain the battery.

Failed starter motor

The starter is an electric motor that gets the engine spinning and pistons pumping in order to create the necessary compression to start the vehicle. If the motor fails or starts to fail you will likely hear a loud clicking noise or a series of clicks when you turn the key.

Failed alternator

The alternator is connected to a belt that spins from the motion of the engine. This part of your car is what produces electricity while the vehicle's engine is turned on. Excess electricity is stored in the battery. Signs of a failing alternator include dim or flickering headlights or the vehicle's engine randomly dying.

Dead battery

If the alternator fails the electricity stored in the battery will be used. This power supply will be quickly extinguished and the next time you try to start your car you won't be able to. However, there are other things that cause batteries to die, such as leaving lights on or running the radio when the engine is not on.
