Strange Vibrations that Indicator Vehicle Problems

It is important to always pay attention to strange symptoms that a vehicle may give off if it is suffering from some sort of trouble. While many of the signs of trouble may be relatively obvious, such as the illumination of the check engine light, others may be more subtle. Weird vibrations that occur as you drive your vehicle likely indicate some sort of trouble, which can be diagnosed to an extent based on what you’re actions are during the vibration. Here are a few common vibrations you may experience and what they might mean.

Steering Wheel Vibration

A shaky steering wheel can mean one of several different issues. Depending on what you’re doing when the shaking occurs you may be able to tell what is happening.

  • Power Steering Problem - If the power steering system is having trouble, such as the drive belt, you may find your steering wheel starting to shake while cornering.
  • Poor Wheel Alignment - If the wheels are out of alignment it means that at least two tires are pointing in different directions. This means that the car will try and travel in two directions at once, resulting in the steering wheel shaking back and forth. This will happen constantly while driving, even when in a straight line. Bad Brakes - Warped rotors could lead to the steering wheel shaking during braking. We’ll talk more about that in a minute!

Gas Pedal Vibration

A strange vibration in the gas pedal likely indicates an exhaust leak. This will usually be accompanied by a rather loud motor. This vibration and the sound will be most prominent during acceleration, as the motor creates more power.

Brake Pedal Vibration

As mentioned, a shaky steering wheel during braking could indicate warped rotors. The same is true if you feel the shaking in the brake pedal. Be sure to let a professional technician check out the issue to restore your vehicle’s safety.

Always be on the lookout for signs of trouble. It is important to have your car serviced as soon as issues become apparent to avoid more extensive damage down the road.
