Common Signs of Alternator Trouble

The alternator is an important piece of the electrical system for any vehicle. It is connected to the timing belt and as the engine spins the alternator which creates electrical power that is transferred to and stored in the battery. If the alternator fails you will soon find yourself struggling with getting the car started and a number of other electrical issues. If you run into any of these common alternator problems be sure to head to the auto shop to have it replaced before you find yourself stranded.

Dead Battery

Let's start with something we already discussed briefly and is one of the most common signs of alternator trouble. A dead battery may be a result of many issues, but if you're positive you didn't leave the lights on, or any accessory for that matter, you likely have a bad alternator. Be sure to have it tested when replacing the battery, if it won't re-juice with a jump start!

Dash Indicator Light

Most car's dashboards are full of indicator lights, such as the check engine light. There is also usually a light specifically for the alternator that reads ALT or BAT. The illumination of this light is often the first indication of trouble and it should not be ignored, even if there are no other signs of a problem.

Dim or Flickering Headlights

A strong signal that your alternator may be on its way out are dim or flickering headlights. The alternator is what provides power to the headlights so any flickering or low power is often a sign of an alternator that cannot perform well.

Electrical Failures

You may experience other electrical issues in your car if the alternator is going bad, as it provides power to many different systems as the car runs. The power windows & locks, dash lights, radio and AC are all supported by the alternator when the engine is spinning. While it is true there may be other causes for these failures, it won't hurt to test your alternator.

Hard Starting or Stalling

If your vehicle has a slow crank and has trouble starting the alternator may be to blame. If it is not able to correctly charge the battery you may find your car's engine struggling to turn over at all. Because the alternator also provides spark for the spark plugs, if it goes bad or malfunctions while driving your car will likely stall.
