4 Tips for Better Gas Mileage this Summer

You may be ready for summer but is your car? The driving season is here and before you set out for the open road you should take some time to prep your vehicle to make sure you spend more time on the highway and less at the gas pump. Not only will these tips to increase MPGs save you money but they will help keep your car running for many more thousands of miles!

Clean or Replace Old Spark Plugs

Spark plugs use gasoline to create a small spark that creates a force to moves the cylinders. A spark plug can fire millions of times every for every 1,000 miles traveled and and a dirty, ill-gapped or corroded spark plug can misfire, causing a waste of fuel. Replacing old spark plugs is a great way to greatly improve engine performance and save on gas.

Properly Inflate your Tires

When tires are low on air it means the engine has to work harder to get the soft rubber to roll over. A harder working engine means it needs to burn more gas to keep up with the load. Tires are designed to be pumped up to a certain PSI so you should visit your local repair shop in order to have your tires properly inflated. This can save you 2 miles per gallon or more!

Don't Warm Up to Long

If you aren't moving, you're getting zero miles per gallon. Cars should not need more than a minute, if that, to be ready for the road. Don't let your car idle for extended periods of time and if it does need more time to function correctly, than you likely have a more serious issue that will require the attention of a professional mechanic.

Replace your Air Filter

If air can't get to into the engine to mix with gas your car will compensate by using more gasoline, causing the engine to run "rich." This is a waste of fuel that can eventually cause bigger problems under the hood.
