Why Won't My Car Start?

Why Won't My Car Start?Your vehicle's starting system is quite complex. It all begins with the turn of a key (or in some cases nowadays the push of a button) that creates an electrical pathway to get the motor running. In a healthy vehicle, the engine will crank and fire within a second or two at most. If your car's engine turns over and over but does not start, or takes a long time to start, it means that there is some sort of issue at hand that needs resolve. The following are some of the most common reasons a car won't start and what these problems' symptoms are.

Dead Battery

Perhaps the most common reason a vehicle won't start is if the car's battery is dead. If there is no juice in the battery there will be no electrical power available to get the starting process going. This means when you turn the key absolutely nothing will happen. Batteries that die due to leaving a door open or the lights on can generally be jump started and charged back to health, but they do require replacement every couple of years, depending on the type.

Failed Starter

The starter motor receives a jolt of electricity when the key is turning, allowing it to actuate and connect with the flywheel and then spin the motor to create the motion that keeps it running. If the starter has failed you'll generally just hear a click or series of clicks when turning the key.

Bad Alternator

The alternator is connected to a belt system under the hood that spins off the motion of the motor. The alternator is what provides electrical power for your car when it is running and stores excess electricity in the battery for the next time the car starts. A failing alternator will give you signs of trouble, such as dim headlights or trouble with electrical accessories like power locks.

Fuel Delivery Problem

If your vehicle's engine cranks over and over and over but does not start up it could be due to the fact it is not getting fuel. This may be due to a fuel pump that has malfunctioned or a clogged fuel filter.

Ignition Issue

If the ignition itself is giving you trouble you may not even be able to turn the key. However another indicator of a failing ignition switch is if your dash lights come on and off randomly.
