7 Signs that You Need Suspension Repair

A healthy suspension doesn't just provide smooth driving. It also improves safety by helping to keep all four wheels on the ground during a collision. When you first notice a sign of suspension trouble, you'll want to have a mechanic take a look. Here's a look at seven symptoms of suspension trouble.

Bouncy Driving

A classic sign of a suspension problem is that every little bump in the road makes your vehicle bounce excessively.

Fails the Bounce Test

By doing a quick test, you can get a better sense of if your shocks/struts are worn-out. To begin, make sure your vehicle is securely parked and at no risk of rolling. Next, go to the front end and use all of your weight to press down on it. Rock it twice and release. Then, go around back and repeat this step on the rear. Upon letting go, your vehicle should only rock on its own two or three times. But if it rocks more than this, then it'll be best to have a mechanic inspect your suspension.

Braking Issues

Failing shocks can make it seem like you're thrusting forward at a downward angle when you hit the brakes. Also, a bad suspension can make it take significantly longer to arrive at a complete stop after you've started braking.

Bald Spots on Tires

A faulty suspension can cause uneven tire wear. As a result, bald spots could develop on your tires.

One Corner Sits Low

If a spring is damaged, you may notice your vehicle sitting lower in one corner. A bad spring can also lead to clunking sounds when you drive over bumps.

Drifting/Swaying

Assuming you're driving at a safe speed, it shouldn't feel like your vehicle is drifting as you navigate sharp corners. But if you do get this sensation, then suspension trouble could be brewing.

Visible Damage/Leaking

It's smart to occasionally get down and check your suspension for signs of obvious trouble. Your shocks will likely need to be replaced if you can see oil leaking out onto them.

If you need suspension repair, be sure to bring your vehicle to a reputable mechanic.
