Why is the check engine light on?

Why is the check engine light on?There are many, many automotive problems that can trigger that pesky check engine light, but often times it is one of five common issues that made it turn on. It is important to get to the repair shop as soon as you notice this light as whatever made it turn on will only get worse, resulting in a need for more expensive service or repairs. Here are your top 5 check engine light problems.

Failed catalytic converter

Many check engine light problems are quite minor, but this is one of the worst ones, money wise. However, if this is the problem, it is likely the light has been on for some time and an early, smaller problem led to the failure of this important exhaust system part. The catalytic converter converts harmful exhaust fumes into less hazardous emissions.

Oxygen sensor

The oxygen sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust to help create a more efficient air/fuel mix for the engine to burn. If the sensor fails your car could burn excess gasoline, which will lead to a massive drop and fuel economy and could cause damage to the catalytic converter and spark plugs.

MAF sensor

On the other end of the car is the mass air flow sensor. This sensor is responsible for determining how much air needs to be mixed with the gasoline. A failed sensor can result in damage to the spark plugs, o2 sensor, catalytic converter and you will also experience a drop in MPGs.

Misfiring

Misfiring is when the spark plugs fire when the cylinder is not in the correct place, resulting in a poor running, gas wasting engine. This can be caused by bad spark plugs, spark plug wires or ignition coils.

Broken or Loose gas cap

If your gas cap is loose, cracked or otherwise broken, it can cause fuel to evaporate through the filler hose. This is the best case scenario for a check engine light problem, as it can usually be fixed with a twist of the wrist!

It is important that you never ignore the check engine light, as doing so will result in much worse problems. If you need check engine light diagnostics in Covina visit Hye Tech Auto.
