Why Won't My Car Start?

Few things are as frustrating as a vehicle that decides not to start. There are numerous problems that can cause this issue. In order to figure out exactly what is wrong with your car's starting system it is best to leave it to a professional technician to handle the diagnosis. However you can make certain assumptions about what is wrong based on the symptoms you're experiencing.

While the starting system is quite complex, each component does have relatively individualistic signs of failure. If you're able to tell your mechanic what's wrong you might be able to speed up the repair process, as long as they agree with your hypothesis!

Bad Ignition Switch

A failed ignition switch means that the starting system will not be able to initiate at all. The most common signs of a failed ignition include a key that will not turn, flickering dash lights as you try to start your car and stalling as you try to start the vehicle.

Failed Starter

The starter motor is very instrumental in getting the car started, as it spins the flywheel to get the pistons pumping. A general sign of starter motor that is no longer working correctly is a loud click or series of clicks that occurs when you turn the key. This is the sound of the motor actuating but not spinning.

Alternator Problems

The alternator produces the electricity to get the vehicle running, keep it running and operate the vehicle's lights and accessories when the car is on. A failing alternator will cause headlights to be dim and engine cranking may be very slow, until it finally drains the battery.

Fuel Delivery Issue

If there is a problem with getting gas to the motor you will hear the engine continuously turning over and over but not firing up.

Dead Battery

Of course the most common cause of no start situations is a dead battery. Batteries can die from lights and other accessories being left on while the car is not running, or simply because they've reached the end of their lifespan.
