Why are my MPGs Lower?

Why are my MPGs Lower?Who doesn't want to get the most out of their gas tank? A reduction in fuel efficiency is not only bad for your wallet, it's bad for the environment, also. If you've noticed you're spending more time and money at the pump, it is likely that one of these 6 reasons is the reason why. Be sure to visit your favored auto shop for further diagnostics and repairs, before the problem grows worse.

Bad Sensor

There are a several sensors that help regulate the flow of air and gas into the combustion chamber. The mass airflow (MAF) sensor detects incoming air at the front of the vehicle to determine how much fuel to mix with it to make the engine run right. At the other end of the car is the oxygen sensor, which measures oxygen in the exhaust to dictate gas flow as well. If either of these fail (which would trigger the check engine light) you will get bad fuel economy.

Exhaust Leaks

An exhaust leak will cause incorrect readings by the oxygen sensor. If a leak is present the sensor will pick up excessive oxygen in the exhaust, causing it to send more gas to the combustion chamber.

Incorrect Tire Inflation

If your tires are under-inflated (low on air) the engine will have to work harder to make the soft rubber spin. A harder working motor simply translates into an increased use of gas.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter can prevent the proper amount of oxygen from getting into the combustion chamber. The car will then use more gas to compensate, causing it to run rich.

Misfiring

The spark plugs are what ignites the air and gas mix. If they are working improperly due to be corroded they will not burn gas as intended.

Wrong Oil Type

If you use the wrong type of oil in your car it could result in excessive friction in the engine. Always speak with a expert technician when conducting oil changes at home, or have them done at professional auto maintenance shop.
