Why is the check engine light on?

It is one of those things you never want to see, but more than likely, it's going to happen to you if you drive regularly. The check engine light may cause you to feel your stomach drop upon first seeing it turn on, but you shouldn't be worried. Chances are there is just some small problem that has arisen that needs to be taken care of. However, if you don't get the issue resolved soon it will grow worse. This could result in a need for extensive and expensive repair. As soon as the check engine light comes on head to your local auto repair shop for proper diagnostics.

Loose gas cap

In the best case scenario the check engine light popped on to let you know that you forgot to tighten the gas cap after filling up. If the gas cap is loose, cracked or otherwise broken it may allow fuel vapors to evaporate out of the gas tank. This would be caught by the EVAP system, thus triggering the light.

Transmission problems

It is important to note that the check engine light doesn't turn on just for engine related problems. Things such as transmission trouble will also turn the light on. The most common transmission issue that will trigger the light is low transmission fluid levels.

Faulty MAF Sensor

The mass airflow sensor detects incoming air and calculates how much of it needs to be mixed with the gasoline in order to create a properly running engine. If the sensor malfunctions it can greatly reduce your fuel efficiency and the overall performance of the vehicle.

Bad O2 sensor

On the other end of the car is the oxygen sensor, which monitors the amount of oxygen in the exhaust in order to also help calculate the proper air/fuel mix. A malfunctioning O2 sensor could also cause poor fuel efficiency, and may lead to trouble with the catalytic converter if not quickly fixed.

Failed catalytic converter

The catalytic converter is one of the most expensive parts to replace on a car. It converts hazardous exhaust fumes into less harmful emissions. However, it will not break unless there is some other trouble, trouble that would have likely caused the light to turn on first. This is why it is important to always get to the repair shop for check engine light diagnostics as soon as it turns on.
